While it’s not the rarest feat in baseball, it’s still awfully fun to watch a hitter slug 3 home runs in a game. When Trayce Thompson hit the trifecta for the Dodgers on April 1, 2023, I started wondering when it happened last for each MLB team. And, well, here we are.
Below, you’ll see the most recent three-homer game for each club (thanks to Statmuse), along with a video of the performance to enjoy (thanks to YouTube). I also listed out the other three-homer occurrences in each franchise’s history. The goal was for it to be an exhaustive list. However, I may have missed some, so if I have, reach out and let me know.

Josh Rojas ended up hitting a total of nine homers in 2022. So, one-third of his season-long total came in one night. He also didn’t hit more than two homers in a single month the rest of the year (one in June, two in July, one in August, and two in September/October).

The month of September was a special one for Adam Duvall in 2020. So special that we couldn’t just share one three-homer game. We had to share both. Here’s the first one:

Duvall ended up hitting 16 homers during the pandemic-shortened season. However, 11 (!) came in the final month. He paired it with a .232/.309/.616 triple slash and 20 RBI in 111 plate appearances.

This performance from Ryan Mountcastle helped launch him toward setting a new Orioles rookie single-season home run record, right? Right. He hit just one more homer during the month of May. However, it was followed by his most powerful month of the 2021 season. Mountcastle finished June with nine homers.

Trevor Story‘s debut season with the Red Sox was mostly forgettable. Outside of a short stretch in May, at least. On May 18th, Story had a season-long OPS of just .613. By May 27th, it climbed up to .769. During that seven-game stretch in between, he slashed .345/.394/1.069 with seven homers, 21 RBI, and 11 runs scored.

Rafael Ortega hit 21 home runs in his career prior to the 2023 season. A career-high 11 came in 2021 for the Cubs, with this night, in particular, standing out for all the obvious reasons. Through the end of July, Ortega had hit just three homers. So, he doubled his season-long total in one game. He finished the year on a high note by slugging a total of eight homers between August and September.

Hitting the first homer of your MLB career is always memorable. But doing it as part of a three-homer night is pretty nuts. Seby Zavala would hit just two more homers the rest of the year, which spanned 36 games played.

Here’s the first Jesse Winker three-homer performance of 2021:

This was part of a career year for Winker, which included a trip to the All-Star Game and career-high marks in homers (24) and RBI (71) entering the 2023 campaign. He played 14 games between these two performances and ripped the cover off the ball. Across 65 plate appearances, Winker slashed .379/.446/.845 with nine homers and 14 RBI.

This was the first three-homer game in Cleveland history since Edwin Encarnacion last did it on May 2nd, 2018. It was also the first such performance of Jose Ramirez‘s career. With each homer he slugs, the infielder is getting closer to entering the top five on the Guardians’ all-time home run list.
Since he’s signed through 2028, that’s only a matter of time.

Three-homer games are a little extra enjoyable when they include a walk-off dinger. Brendan Rodgers knows a little something about that. Across two full seasons with the Rockies in 2021 and 2022, the Gold Glove infielder has slugged 28 total homers.

Victor Martinez slugged at least 20 homers in a season seven times during his 16-year MLB career. This three-homer effort was part of his final such year in 2016. The designated hitter slugged 27 dingers during that campaign for the Tigers. This performance accounted for half of his homers during the month of June, and it also matched the number he hit throughout the entire month of May.

The Astros are trying to gain some steam down the stretch, and second baseman Jose Altuve is getting himself ready to launch bombs in the postseason. He hit these three home runs in his first three plate appearances. This performance also gave him five homers in his last two games.

Lorenzo Cain was limited to 103 games with the Royals in 2016. So, he tried to make the most of his time on the field. Six of his nine homers happened in May. It also included a .351/.387/.577 line, seven doubles, 25 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Are you surprised Mike Trout or Shohei Ohtani hasn’t done this yet, too? It’s only a matter of time, folks. This was part of a terrific campaign for Torii Hunter. He went to the All-Star Game and won a Gold Glove (which isn’t surprising). He also added a Silver Slugger thanks to a .299/.366/.508 triple slash, along with 22 homers and 90 RBI.

Trayce Thompson became the first player to hit three home runs in a game during the 2023 season. The best part of all? It’s that each of his three dingers had the same exit velocity: 107.5 mph. You can’t make that up even if you tried.

As the Marlins chased down a postseason berth during the pandemic-shortened season, Brian Anderson‘s power helped get them there. Six of his 11 homers came during the final month of the season, as he posted a .865 OPS over 114 plate appearances.
Other players to accomplish the feat: Cody Ross, Mike Lowell
Kolten Wong is more known for his defense. That’s what makes him being recognized for a three-homer game even better. Through 2022, the 15 homers Wong slugged for the Brewers are a single-season career-high mark. He got there with a couple of powerful months to end the year. Wong had at least four homers with 10-plus RBI in August and September. He didn’t reach either of those benchmarks in the four months prior.

Miguel Sano hit 30-plus homers for the second time in his career in 2021. He finished the month of May with a .191/.261/.476 line thanks to hitting seven homers. That was his high-water number during the year, one that he matched again in September.

The 2021 season was a rough first campaign in Flushing for Francisco Lindor. He followed it up with a record-breaking 2022 performance, and the foundation for it was laid in September 2021. This was easily his most powerful — and productive — month of the year, which included a .895 OPS, nine homers, and 25 RBI.

If you’re thinking, “Hey, didn’t Aaron Judge have a three-homer game earlier in the 2023 season?” The answer to that question would be yes. He’s become the first Yankees player to record multiple three-homer performances in the same year.

Shea Langeliers produced the second three-homer performance of the 2024 season. Like Harper (which you’ll see below), they accounted for his first three homers of the year. It’s just the second time in franchise history that an A’s catcher blasted three taters in one contest. The last time it happened was May 21, 1925 by Mickey Cochrane.

Bryce Harper‘s 2024 season started slow in Philly. He didn’t have a single hit or RBI through his first four games (11 plate appearances). His third homer of this game was a grand slam, powering a three-hit, six-RBI outburst.

This powerful night from Michael Perez was the perfect exclamation point to an outrageous month for the Pirates. He was the third Pittsburgh player to slug three homers in a game in June of 2022, joining Bryan Reynolds and Jack Suwinski. Heading into 2023, Perez had just 15 career homers to his name, with six coming in 2022.

Why hit 3 homers in a game when you can do it in four innings? Yeah, Fernando Tatis Jr. was that dude. His 42 homers in 2021 led the National League and more than doubled his career total coming into the year (39 homers).

Joc Pederson couldn’t be stopped on this night against the Mets. The outfielder put together a .874 OPS with a team-high 23 homers and 70 RBI during an All-Star campaign by the Bay. This three-homer game was part of a powerful first half for Pederson, too. He slugged 17 of his 23 homers before the All-Star break.

Comerica Park is not typically a hitter-friendly venue, but it was on this particular night for Kyle Seager. The third baseman had nine homers to his name between May and July. By the time August was through, he doubled that number with another nine dingers.

Paul Goldschmidt’s 2023 season was already off to a solid start. After finally winning his first MVP Award in 2022, the first baseman had a .900 OPS and 151 wRC+ through his first 149 plate appearances. That also included four home runs. So, in one afternoon, he nearly doubled his season-long dinger total. That’s a solid day at the office.

Entering the 2022 season, Isaac Paredes had hit just two homers across 57 big-league games. He finished the year with 20 homers for the Rays, including this memorable three-homer performance against the Yankees. Just another example proving you can’t predict baseball.

Adolis Garcia gave the Rangers their first three-homer game since April of 2018 by doing some yard work himself. Racking up three dingers in the same contest is a special occasion, no matter how it happens. But, Garcia had not one, but two cracks at hitting his fourth dinger before the night was over. His three jacks came in his first three plate appearances, all of which happened by the fifth inning.
Garcia couldn’t hit that fourth tater. He did still produce a five-hit game by doubling twice. That made him just the fourth player ever to have a three-homer, two-double night (which also included eight RBI).

It’s hard to finish a season any better than what Bo Bichette did in 2022 for the Blue Jays. Through the end of August, he was hitting .260/.305/.420 with 17 homers and 66 RBI. From September 1st on, the shortstop slashed .406/.444/.602 with seven homers and 27 RBI.

Lane Thomas had three home runs through 43 games played. He doubled that total in just one night, and finished June with five homers. Thomas would eventually hit 17 dingers in 548 plate appearances for Washington.
