It’s no surprise that we love home runs here. So, you better believe that the All-Star week event we’re most looking forward this season to is the 2024 Home Run Derby. It’d be weird if we weren’t.
To properly channel that excitement, we’re collecting information about the event as it becomes available right here.
The Texas Rangers will play host for the 2024 All-Star Game and All-Star Week activities/events. Globe Life Field first opened in 2020 and was home to the World Series during the pandemic-shortened season. So, with that and the Rangers winning it all in 2023, the stadium has hosted two Fall Classics before getting its first All-Star Game.
The 2024 Home Run Derby is scheduled for July 15. The time is currently to be determined, but it’s typically 8 p.m. EST.
The Home Run Derby usually airs on ESPN, so it should be easy to watch if you’re not at the ballpark. But if you’re looking for tickets to this cool event, make sure you save up your pennies. Seats aren’t cheap, but there are opportunities to buy some without having to be a millionaire. It’s not like trying to buy tickets for the Super Bowl, ya know.

We won’t know the answer to this question for another few months. Part of it will depend on which hitters are among baseball’s home run leaders as we get closer to the All-Star break. But with the Rangers playing host, at least one Texas player will likely be entering the contest. The club features several heavy hitters, including the infield pairing of second baseman Marcus Semien and shortstop Corey Seager. However, my money would be on outfielder Adolis Garcia, especially since he took part in the Derby at T-Mobile Park in 2023.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won it all last July, so he’ll probably get an invite to defend his crown. It’s undetermined if the Blue Jays slugger will want to do it again, though.
While there could be some small changes/tweaks to the overall format, we can assume things will mostly stay the same as they have in recent years. Mostly because the event is jam-packed with action and moves along at a mostly brisk pace. Here’s what the format has been:
Eight participants are put into a bracket for a head-to-head matchup. Seeding is determined by how many first-half homers they hit. Hitters receive three-minute timed at-bats in the first two rounds (two-minute at-bats in the finals).
Each slugger is allowed to use one 45-second timeout. If they slug at least two homers 440-plus feet, they earn 30 seconds of bonus time in addition to the 30 seconds everyone gets at the end of each round.
Two tiebreakers are in place. The first is a one-minute at-bat to hit as many homers as possible. If both players are still tied, they have a Swing-Off, where they get three swings each to see if the tie can be broken.
Before the 2024 Home Run Derby gets underway, it’s important to revisit the event’s history by taking a stroll down memory lane. That’s where we come in to help out.
