5 Awesome 2025 Donruss Baseball Cards of Former MLB Stars

Panini’s 2025 Donruss Baseball cards release from this past summer brought back the brand’s retro appeal by mixing prospects with retired legends in a collector-friendly format. As noted by Mike D. of Cardlines, the product focused heavily on this approach since Panini no longer holds MLB licensing rights.

While that seems like a disadvantage, it’s nice to get another glimpse of former MLB stars on cardboard. Most of these cards won’t be seen as having huge investment potential, but several former stars received ultra-rare Gold Vinyl Optic parallels that have sold for serious cash. Let’s check out a few of them.

Frank Thomas’ Hall of Fame Power Is Still Alive & Well

Thomas was one of the best hitters of his generation. The two-time MVP Award winner pummeled American League pitching throughout his 19-year career, which spanned from 1990 through 2008. He racked up over 10,000 plate appearances and finished with a .301 lifetime average, along with 521 home runs (which is still among the most all-time).

Part of what made Thomas special was his patience and consistency. He posted seven consecutive seasons with a .300 average, 20 homers, 100 RBI, 100 runs, and 100 walks from 1991-1997. An average year for The Big Hurt during this span included a .330/.452/.604 line with 35 homers, 33 doubles, 117 RBI, 106 runs scored, and 119 walks.

In the collecting world, Thomas cards are still popular thanks to his Hall of Fame legacy. His 1990 Topps (especially the one that doesn’t have his name on the front) and 1990 Leaf rookies anchored countless junk wax era collections. The $800 sale of his Gold Vinyl Optic 1/1 from 2025 Donruss shows us that high-end Thomas cards still resonate within the market.

Nolan Ryan’s Enduring Legacy Through Modern Card Releases

Ryan’s impact on baseball goes beyond stats, but his numbers are still something worth marveling over. His accomplishments include seven no-hitters and 5,714 career strikeouts, both of which are MLB records. The Ryan Express also holds the single-season strikeout record with 383 in 1973. He led the league in this category 11 different times.

What’s even more impressive about the hard-throwing right-hander was his longevity — he pitched for 27 years (!!) in the big leagues, debuting as a 19-year-old in 1966 and retiring as a 46-year-old in 1993. His final no-hitter came at the tender age of 44.

Ryan’s collectibility spans generations. His 1968 Topps rookie with Jerry Koosman is still iconic. Modern releases like 2025 Donruss keep his legend alive for younger collectors. It’s noteworthy that a standard Gold parallel like his (/10) can sell for more than $100. There’s obviously plenty of interest in getting a piece of cardboard featuring the all-time strikeout king, even if there are licensing limitations to consider.

What Makes 2025 Donruss Baseball Stand Out

According to Beckett.com’s Ryan Cracknell, the 2025 Panini Donruss Baseball release dropped on June 18, with hobby boxes averaging three autos or memorabilia cards, 24 Optic chrome cards, and 24 inserts or parallels.

As mentioned before, the product focuses on retired legends and minor league prospects due to Panini’s lack of MLB licensing. Popular insert sets include Unleashed, Bomb Squad, Diamond Marvels, and ultra-rare chases like Stained Glass and Night Moves. New additions for 2025 include the Get To Know insert series and Donruss Sketches Autos.

The parallel rainbow extends from basic Holo and Laser versions through numbered parallels like Orange Laser (/299), Red (/250), and Pink Ice (/99), along with ultra-rare Gold (/10), Gold Vinyl Optic (/1), and Printing Plates (1/1).
