Ben Rice MLB Debut Patch Auto Breaks Record With $68,989 eBay Sale

A record sale on a…Ben Rice rookie card?! It’s true, and the final price will probably make you stop for a second. A Ben Rice MLB Debut Patch Auto — a 1/1 certified autograph with a game-worn patch from his debut on June 18, 2024 — sold on eBay for $68,989, officially making it the most expensive Ben Rice card ever sold.

And honestly, given what Rice has done on the field since his debut (and what could be to come for him), the price makes sense.

What Makes This Ben Rice MLB Debut Patch Auto So Special

As we can see in the above picture, this is a Topps Certified Autograph Issue with an authentic game-worn patch embedded directly into the card. It’s a relic from the uniform Rice wore on the day he officially became a big leaguer. We can also see that it’s plainly numbered 1/1, and the debut date — June 18, 2024 — is right on the front.

The combination of having the patch, a certified auto, a 1/1 print run, and the RC designation is about as loaded as a baseball card can get. That’s why so many people chase these rookie patch auto cards each year.

They’re already premium cards in any set, but when you layer in the fact that it’s from a player who has since become one of the Yankees’ more important pieces, you’re looking at a card that can never be replicated.

Rice’s Rise: From Debut to Yankee Cornerstone?

Rice’s first taste of MLB action in 2024 included making some history on July 6 against the Boston Red Sox. He became the first Yankee rookie to hit three homers in a game, and at 25 years old, he was the youngest to accomplish the feat since Bobby Murcer in 1970.

Although the overall stats didn’t jump off the page — he slashed .171/.264/.349 in 178 plate appearances — there was hope something was there for the Bombers to leverage as he gained more big-league experience.

Rice took another significant step forward in 2025, which was his first full MLB campaign. The left-handed hitter appeared in 138 games while racking up 530 plate appearances, which led to impressive jumps in his overall stat line. He slashed .255/.337/.499 with 26 homers, 28 doubles, 65 RBI, and 74 runs scored.

And while we’re still quite early on in the 2026 season, it seems like he’s gearing up to be an important contributor for New York. Through his first 36 plate appearances, Rice is hitting .370/.528/.852 with three homers, four doubles, 11 RBI, and 10 runs scored. He also has the same number of walks and strikeouts (nine each).

Based on the timing of this sale, the person who bought Rice’s MLB Debut Patch Auto thinks there’s a good chance the value rises even higher.

How $68,989 Fits Into the Yankees Rookie Card Market

Obviously, a $68,989 price tag is eye-popping for any player at Rice’s stage of his career. He’s still a pre-arb player, has only one full season under his belt, and hasn’t accumulated the accolades yet that typically push card prices to that level. What’s driving this sale is the combination of the card’s unique qualities and the market pricing in Rice’s ceiling rather than his current résumé.

Yankees cards carry a built-in premium. The franchise’s global fanbase and the pinstripes themselves elevate prices across the board. Add in the 1/1 designation, the game-worn element, and the fact that this card is tied to the specific moment Rice’s career began, and you have a card that functions as a true collectible rather than just a graded investment vehicle.

What This Sale Means for Rice’s Broader Card Market

A headline sale like this one not only establishes a new ceiling, but it can also pull every other card up with it. Collectors who have been sitting on Rice rookies, parallels, and autos might feel the impact of this. His more accessible cards, like base rookie autos and lower-numbered parallels from 2024 Topps products, are worth a closer look right now while the spotlight is on him.

The timing matters too. With Rice off to a great start in 2026 and the Yankees looking like contenders yet again, every positive development on the field adds fuel to an already hot market. If he continues hitting at this level and New York makes a deep postseason run, don’t be surprised if this sale looks like a bargain by October.

The card market has a way of rewarding patience, and whoever just paid nearly $69,000 for that 1/1 is clearly betting on a very long run.
